The first trailer for the upcoming star-studded comedy Breaking News in Yuba County is proving that there is something to laugh about in 2021. Starring Allison Janney, Awkwafina, Mila Kunis, Regina Hall, Wanda Sykes, Matthew Modine, Jimmi Simpson, Juliette Lewis, Ellen Barkin, Samira Wiley, Bridget Everett, Clinton Collins, Jr., and Keong Sim, the dark comedy looks like a ridiculous ride that we can’t wait to take.

The first look the oddball film shows Oscar winner Janney as Sue Buttons, a small-town housewife who appears to arrive home one day to find her house destroyed and her husband Karl (Modine) missing. Rather than call the local police, Sue contacts her half-sister, a news anchor played by Kunis. Hall manages to cast a serious tone as the police officer investigating the disappearance of Karl, even while wearing a very unfortunate wig. Golden Globe nominee Awkwafina portrays a wannabe gangster along with Collins Jr. and the pair may or may not have been involved in Karl’s disappearance. As instructed by their boss, played by Sim, the pair set about striking fear in the local townspeople, including Sykes, who receives a headbutt courtesy of the Nora From Queens star. That’s what happens when you point a gun at someone’s vagina.

As for Lewis, she plays a daytime TV host who has no qualms about accommodating Sue’s dreams of becoming famous, even if her star-making move is the disappearance of her husband. Westworld actor Jimmi Simpson acts as the missing man’s brother. Wiley takes a break from her dramatic role as Moira in The Handmaid’s Tale to play a heavily pregnant woman who may possibly be Karl’s mistress. It’s a lot of outrageous drama to unfold over a single week in a small town.

Breaking News in Yuba County is the feature film debut of writer Amanda Idoko, whose previous credits include The Mayor, The Goldbergs and Apple TV’s new animated series Central Park. Directing the film is Tate Taylor, which reunites him with Janney, who starred in Taylor’s 2011 film The Help.

Breaking News In Yuba County will be released in theatres and on streaming platforms starting February 12, although which specific platforms will be carrying the film have not yet been announced.

Breaking News In Yuba County is the latest wild comedy that has audiences excited to stay home and find something to laugh about in 2021. Earlier this week, the first trailer for Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo’s retro film Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar arrived and promised to let audiences live vicariously through the vacation-centric film (what is a vacation again?). The team behind Bridesmaids have written and will star in the comedy, which includes fanny packs, perms, a lot of neon-hued clothing and some hunky-ness courtesy of Jamie Dornan and Damon Wayans Jr. Fortune Feimster, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Rose Abdoo, Vanessa Bayer, Phyllis Smith, and Kwame Patterson also star in the film, which was originally slated for a July release and thankfully has been moved up to February. We need something to look forward to this winter.
